"but it's causing very much had drive traffic" – If trying to read again and again one and the same short piece of information from a hard disk causes "high hard drive activity" then the OS does very lousy job with caching; unless the reading program explicitly requests bypassing the cache (I don't know if it's possible when reading from the registry). If it bypasses the cache then this is a part of the problem. Normally a program may reread something 1000 times in a row and a decent OS caches data from the first read. I do not know if Windows 8 is decent though.
